Mt. Uncompahgre (14,309 feet)
Rising dramatically in an abrupt north face to stand guard over the drainage of the Cimarron River and Big Blue Creek, Uncompahgre Peak is the highest point in the San Juans and certainly one of its most prominent landmarks. Inhabited first by grizzlies and Indians, the word Uncompahgre is a Ute word meaning "hot" (unca) "water" (pah) "spring" (gre).
