In 1869, Professor Josiah Dwight Whitney led the first class of the Harvard Mining School into the Sawatch Range. Fueled by rumors heard in the barrooms of Fairplay of peaks exceeding 17,000 feet, this small band of eager climbers summited and named both Mount Harvard and Mount Yale, the first of the Collegiate Peaks.
